THE RESTORATION OF THE WEST PORCH
The porch was found to have serious damage and rot in parts of the wooden frame and damage to the stonework and mortar of the walls.
Here can be seen the damage to the horizontal beams and the top joints where the uprights meet the roof.
Specialist craftsman carpenter David set to work making and fitting new pieces to blend with the old. Born with a shortened right arm, he uses only standard tools and has adapted his working practices to use them with great skill. Here are some close-up views of his finished work, the new wood being cleverly shaped to use as much of the original as possible.
At the same time the old mortar was removed and replaced with new.
A modern touch can be seen here where a new stone has been given a slope on the top surface to allow improved rainwater run-off.
